Kokoda Outdoor Education Instructor - Casual and Fulltime Roles Available

Position Description

This role requires an organised, mature, caring professional capable of competently facilitating a variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds in the outdoors for extended periods. 

Our programs are designed to utilise adventure-based activities, our natural environment, community living and the wilderness setting as tools for self-awareness, development, teamwork and relationships with the natural environment.

You must facilitate safe, enjoyable and challenging programs achieving the client's desired outcomes touching on the history of the Kokoda campaign, featuring the Kokoda values, Endurance, Courage, Mateship and Sacrifice throughout the camp.  

As the face of our organisation, interaction with clients, the KYF community and members of the public require employees to demonstrate professionalism at all times. Respect is shown not only in the quality of work but also in how you present yourself. Therefore, it is imperative employees maintain a professional presentation while working or carrying out their official duties.

Instructors are to ensure our clients' needs are met, that any promises made to the client are delivered, organisational policies and procedures are followed throughout programs. 

When instructing on a program you are required to facilitate participants in a safe, managed setting whilst promoting environmental awareness and positive attitudes towards the use of the natural environment and our facility. Management of the group and campsites as well as setting up and packing down of activity equipment, assuring cleanliness and hygiene is met. Overseeing meal preparation, cooking and safe food handling, developing a co-operative working unit of people in isolated areas.

Maintaining our Camp facilities (Camp Kokoda and Kokoda Park) is not possible without the assistance of instructional staff. If you notice a task or issue that requires maintenance and you can easily complete it yourself, this assistance is greatly appreciated. Furthermore, it is a requirement that you make the maintenance person or Kokoda management aware of any maintenance required.

Mandatory Requirements:
  • Relevant experience facilitating and managing groups in remote settings  
  • Certificate III or Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation (or equivalent) qualifications are required with the following competencies in bushwalking, canoeing, high and low ropes, abseiling and archery.
  • Working with Children Blue Card for Queensland
  • Wilderness First Aid Qualification or equivalent
  • Up to date logbooks
  • Current Manual Driver's Licence
Key Responsibilities:

GENERAL DUTIES AND JOB OVERVIEW

  1. To effectively brief, oversee, conduct and debrief with a challenge by choice framework with activities such as high ropes, low ropes, giant swing, free fall, crate stack, abseiling, archery, initiatives, canoeing and expedition hikes.
  2. Manage safe and efficient use of all activities, guide participants at any activity site and rescue, evacuate, or administer first aid if and when required.
  3. Ensure our site-specific Safety Operation Procedures are followed at all times.
  4. Use and pack the gear away in a responsible manner ensuring longevity and care of equipment are met.
  5. Consult with the group to select appropriate meals including dietary's for the duration of the camp. Select the appropriate food and quantities and organise for movement of this food with the group. Supervise preparation and cooking of food.
  6. Ensure all paperwork is completed during the program and before client departure.
  7. In addition to the maintenance tasks that staff are required to conduct during camp (i.e. putting rubbish away, supervising student clean-ups and so on), staff are required to do maintenance tasks after a program on request of the Program Coordinator, Operations Manager or Camp Director.
  8. Build rapport with the group including teachers. Include teachers in decision making or making additional changes to the program.
  9. Recognise potential risks, procedures and emergency situations and notify management accordingly and take relevant action where required.
  10. Maintenance and reporting of any broken activity or venue equipment.
