Head of Department - Outdoor Education (Colo)

Founded in 1881 by the Marist Brothers, St Joseph’s College is a boarding and day secondary boys’ school, whose Catholic identity is shaped by Marist spirituality and traditions. Governed by Marist Schools Australia, the College enrolment is approximately 1,100 students.

The College seeks to appoint an outstanding, committed and experienced Outdoor Education leader for the College’s Colo Outdoor Education Campus. This well-established centre is situated on 30 hectares bounded by the Colo River and the Wollemi National Park, with extensive facilities and equipment. The Campus is the base for the College’s sequential Outdoor Education program for Years 7-9, and offers multiple program activities including adventure ropes course, bushwalking, canoeing, mountain biking, expeditions, problem solving initiatives, rock climbing and orienteering.

The Head of the Colo Outdoor Education Campus is responsible for the leadership and direction of the Campus. In consultation with the School Leadership Team, the successful applicant will develop and implement programs to consolidate and advance current structures. The role includes responsibility for all aspects of delivery of the Outdoor Education program; risk management systems; management of the property and infrastructure; and leadership of Outdoor Education staff and support staff. The Head of the campus is an essential member of the outdoor teaching and pastoral care team of St Joseph’s College.

The successful applicant will:
  • be a qualified Outdoor Education teacher or Outdoor Educator with proven experience in this field
  • have a demonstrated commitment to the value of Outdoor Education and a vision for its development
  • have strong interpersonal, leadership and management skills
  • have sound knowledge and experience with risk management systems, and demonstrate the ability to identify and manage risks while operating in the field
  • be a proactive thinker with demonstrated strategic planning skills
  • be supportive of the Catholic ethos and traditions of the College and give witness to its values.
